What to Bring
- Packs should weigh no more than 20% of your body weight.
- 2 – 3 litres of water is required. Water bladders are great however they can sometimes split. It’s also a good idea to have a 1 litre water bottle (ensuring the lid isn’t leaking).
- Tent. There are a small number of tents available at the hall. If you don’t have a light weight tent please speak to Big Bird or Crocodile. 1 – 2 man tents are ideal.
- Sleeping bag and matt.
- Comfortable walking shoes and comfy socks. Ensure your shoes are well worn in and you’re confident they don’t give you blisters.
- You should be carrying enough food for 2 x lunches, 2 x dinners, 2 x breakfast and multiple snacks throughout the day. The best food is dehydrated to keep the weight down. You can grab pre made “meals in a bag” that just require boiling water to be added and can be eaten straight out of the bag. These are available from camping stores like Anaconda and others. There’s always the pasta type meals from the supermarket that you can just add water too. Muesli bars, energy bars, fresh pieces of fruit and a bag of lollies (ideally boiled) are always good to have on hand to keep sugars up.
- Cooking – everyone needs to bring a stove and something at least to boil water in. You can buddy up with someone and share one between two. The little gas stoves that attach to a small gas cannister are the lightest options. Remember your utensils.
- Your first aid kit. Everyone should be packing their basic first aid kits with band aids and a compression bandage to handle minor bumps and grazes yourself.
- Clothing – remember to layer. You should have a base layer, your shirt and trousers (anything against your skin), a mid layer like a fleece for warmth and outer shell like a rain jacket. Breathable and moisture wicking is ideal. Change of underwear and socks. Something to sleep in like tracksuit pants and a fleece. Overnight temps at this time of year are usually around the 10 degree mark and daytime temps low 20's.
- Safety Whistle.
- Head torch with full batteries.
- Base plate compass
- Toilet paper.
- Hat, sunscreen and sunnies.
- Remember it’s a good idea to have the content of your packs in either waterproof or plastic bags. In the event we get some rain you don’t want your dry clothes getting wet!
- Medication – Please bring any medication with you and ensure your this is discussed with leaders.
